Plug-in Electric Vehicles, or PEVs, launched in 2011, have enjoyed more success than analysts thought. When they first launched, PEVs were pricey and limited to the charging infrastructure. Even with these setbacks, PEVs outsold expectations and sold more than twice the number of units of conventional hybrid vehicles during their first 30 months.

In 2013, over 96,000 PEVs were sold in the U.S., nearly 4% of total sales. That is almost double the 2011 total of 2.2%. The Electric Drive Transportation Association (EDTA) reported that PEV sales are at 43,480 vehicles sold through May this year, with is 35% better than the same time frame last year. U.S. EV shoppers have 20 or so models to choose from, with another 17 models expected in the next two years. The charging infrastructure is also growing with nearly 20,000 charging outlets across the U.S.
